Located at the epicenter of the prestigious Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Dunes is an oceanfront resort community that’s considered one of the best family-friendly resort destinations in the world. The resort has won numerous awards, including being named the “#1 Beach Town in the US” by Parents Magazine.
There are numerous family-friendly activities to enjoy in Palmetto Dunes – if you don’t know where to start, here are some of our suggestions:
1. Go on a Guided Dolphin Watch Cruise or Adventure
Get to meet the island’s friendliest residents – the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins! Witness these gentle creatures as they frolic in their natural habitat by joining a dolphin watching cruise at the Shelter Cove Marina.
Dolphin cruises take guests through stunning destinations such as Broad Creek, where you’ll be able to spot not only dolphins, but different types of wildlife as well, including bald eagles, osprey, pelicans, otters, and egrets.
Many of the cruises guarantee dolphin sightings in every trip – in case no dolphins are spotted throughout the duration of the cruise, a free trip will be scheduled for a later date. Check out the outdoor adventures from Outside Hilton Head at The Plaza at Shelter Cove. They offer something for every age. Don’t forget the cruise to Daufauskie Island, just off Hilton Head Island.
2. Shannon Tanner’s Most Excellent Pirate Expedition
In season, take your kids on an unforgettable swashbuckling family adventure by joining Captain Tanner and his pirate crew as they encounter mermaids and ghost dolphins, look for treasure, and engage in an epic water cannon battle at sea.
This fun pirate adventure is usually available from May until September, with private charters available from April to October. For more information, visit piratekidzofhiltonhead.com
3. Palmetto Dunes Junior Golf and Tennis Clinics
Introduce your kids to the sport of golf in a fun way through Palmetto Dunes’ golf programs for kids! There’s the Palmetto Dunes Junior Clinics and Palmetto Dunes Resort Junior Golf Academy, where kids will be able to learn all the basics, and the Advanced Junior Playing program where they get to play with a pro.
For tennis, there’s the Short Shot Clinic for kids aged 4 to 5. The program combines tennis with motor-skill development. There are also other great tennis programs for older kids such as the Super Shots Clinic, Junior Stroke of the Day, and Junior Tennis Camp.
4. Biking is so Easy
Palmetto Dunes features a 50-mile network of paved biking paths perfect for exploring. Drop by Hilton Head Outfitters to rent a bike to explore the Island or ride on the beach. Biking and walking from the Palmetto Dunes and Leamington area to the Shelter Cove Harbour, The Plaza at Shelter Cove and Shelter Cove Towne Centre couldn’t be easier. Take the underground passageway next to the entrance to Palmetto Dunes and cross Highway 278 and explope the entire Shelter Cove area.
Palmetto Dunes is a convenient bike-friendly community.
5. Surfing, Kayaking or Canoeing
Hilton Head Outfitters offers seasonal surfing lessons to people of all ages. All lessons are supervised by an experienced surfing instructor, who will be in charge of teaching the basic fundamentals while emphasizing ocean safety. Canoeing and kayaking throughout the 11-mile lagoon system is one of the most scenic adventures in the community.
